Please note, service fees and relevant rebates (i.e., money back in your pocket) varies between individual practitioners. It is best to speak with your psychologist/mental health professional directly.
We provide psychological support via the Medicare Better Access Scheme (i.e., an Australian government initiative).
You will need to attend your GP (i.e., your doctor) for review, to determine if/where you are eligible to obtain a Mental Health Care Plan/Mental Health Treatment Plan. If/whereby your usual doctor is on leave, an alternate doctor at the same medical clinic should be able to assist. It can be helpful to book a longer consultation with the referring GP, to allow enough time to complete the associated review and relevant documentation.
With a valid Mental Health Care Plan/Mental Health Treatment Plan, you will be able to access the relevant Medicare rebate (i.e., money back in your pocket, per session) for up to 10 sessions per calendar year. Medicare rebates can vary between individual practitioners, please discuss this matter with your psychologist directly. Often, your GP will provide a written referral with 6 sessions denoted. Following completion of these 6 sessions, you will be required to attend your GP for review, to gain access to the additional 4 sessions (i.e., totaling 10 sessions per calendar year).
For psychologists providing bulk billing services, there is no gap fee (i.e., no out of pocket fee per session) with a valid Mental Health Care Plan/Mental Health Treatment Plan. For clinicians who are not offering bulk billing services, a gap fee (i.e., an out of pocket fee per session) will apply and will vary between individual practitioners. Similarly, if you are claiming through NDIS, TAC or Workcover, a gap fee may apply. Please discuss pricing matters with your psychologist directly.
You do not need to obtain a Mental Health Care Plan/Mental Health Treatment Plan to access psychological support, you may wish to pay privately (i.e., pay the full session fees without a rebate - without obtaining any money back in your pocket). However, obtaining a Mental Health Care Plan/Mental Health Treatment Plan does assist with affordability and accessibility.
